We make people
A handspun muslin cloth that weighs 10 gms per square metre and passes through an ordinary ring is not what Khadi is about. Khadi is about the person who made it. From being just a person with a skill, to a person with a livelihood. And that’s only one example. Out of 71 lakh.
71 lakh villagers in 3 lakh villages have found, thanks to KVIC’s vision, both confidence in their skills, as well as a market for them. They have set up 2 lakh small-scale industrial units in their villages to make goods ranging from cloth to household goods to food to cosmetics to oils to agarbattis and more. These units, in turn, have employed even more people for their individual expertise. Little wonder that today, while making rural India increasingly self-reliant, Khadi has ceased to be just a range of products. Instead, it is now a philosophy. Of the people. For the people. By the people.

For every steel plant
we plant 1 million others
One day our Chairman walked into one of our steel plants and said “Where’s the plant?”. Today, Jindal South West boasts over a million trees planted in and around its factory premises.
Steel production need not be an environment-depreciating process. At JSW, we have proven this time and again through little things like planting trees, converting all its waste waters for use in horticulture, and big things like tying up with the Forest Department to develop and protect forest areas.
And these are just some of the many things we stand for. Apart from being one of the leading makers of steel, that is.

We make 2.5 million tons of steel
and zero tons of garbage
And it’s not just that. All the waste gases produced go into making power, while all the waste water is recycled for horticultural purposes. Making the waste not only harmless, but actually beneficial.
At Jindal South West, we do not just address a problem. We turn it around to being a solution to other problems. Today, we do not have to outsource any power. On the other hand, the recycling processes provide livelihoods to many, while also enriching the earth.
And these are just some of the many things we stand for. Apart from being one of the leading makers of steel, that is.

We set new standards of excellence.
And that’s not just in our factories.
Rs 80 per month is all it takes for a little girl in Vasind to be able to write her name. In the admission forms for higher studies.
At Jindal South West we believe that the foundation of the future should be something as strong as steel. We believe in a strong and easily accessible education system. Which has led to the many subsidised English-medium schools for boys and girls across the country. And many other vocational training centres for adults.
And these are just some of the many things we stand for. Apart from being one of the leading makers of steel, that is.

With us, the term ‘state of the art’
is not restricted to technology
All of our magazines at Jindal South West are not industry reports. The Art News Magazine of India is a quarterly magazine published by the Jindal Art Foundation, which is the parent body of Jindal Arts Creative Interaction Centre and the Hampi Foundation.
At JSW, we try to forge a link between business and art. By helping showcase talent and providing in-depth coverage from India and abroad. We bring artists and art centres together. And restore buildings like the JJ School of Art while contributing to its curriculum.
And these are just some of the many things we stand for. Apart from being one of the leading makers of steel, that is.

We provide tough competition.
Be it in steel, badminton or squash.
Our squash court was open all the time. So our gardener’s son won the squash championship. Today there are many proud winners of state, national and international medals in squash, swimming and badminton. But none more proud than us.
We at Jindal South West, through our many sports academies and clubs, have nurtured young talent through the years. By giving them space, equipment, opportunity, training and encouragement.
And these are just some of the many things we stand for. Apart from being one of the leading makers of steel, that is.

Welcome to our world of steel.
Where the metal is not measured in million tons,
but in million trees planted in and around factories.
Where just as steel is produced for your well-being,
hospitals are set up for your health.
Where the future is foreseen, not just through metal structures,
but through the formation of young minds.
Where, while it’s all about work in the factories,
it’s all about play in the sports training houses.
Where the Science of Metallurgy
goes side-by-side with Art institutions.
Welcome to steel. The softest metal on Earth.

Human beings wanted

The world gets smaller every day. Technology advances faster than the speed of imagination. Mankind progresses. But humankind?

Our ears are attuned to the finest nuances of world politics, so we cannot hear what the person standing next to us is saying. Our heads are full of economic affairs, so we cannot hear ourselves think. We are brainwashed into accepting the way things are, so we don’t even know that we have questions to ask.

Until January 16, 2004.

That’s when the World Social Forum 2004 is going to be held. Since 2001, the forum has been hosted for three consecutive years in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It has come to symbolise the strength of the anti-globalisation movement and became a rallying point for the worldwide protest against the war in Iraq. Now, for the first time, the World Social Forum sails out of Latin America and anchors in the heart of Asia. At Mumbai, India. This is in order to reach out in a larger way to the African-Asian region.

The World Social Forum is not an organisation. It is a meeting place. Of human beings. Workers, peasants, indigenous peoples, dalies, the self-employed, minorities, immigrants, students, academics, artisans, artists, women, and more. Tens and thousands and millions of human beings. With voices. That merit hearing. It’s a channel. For democratic debates. For reflective thinking. For free exchanges on a particular conviction That another world is possible. Where words such as neo-liberal globalisation, imperialism, militarism, communalism, casteism, racism and patriarchy can be replaced by others such as equality, justice, peace, humanity, and love.

Then there will be the voice of the Youth Forum. Representing the positive power and vibrancy of the world’s youth.

And still, we are short of a few more human beings. A few tens and thousands and millions more. Could one of them be you? If you are, then please join us in Mumbai from January 16 to 21, 2004. And if you cannot make it, at least help us ensure that the voice of humanity can be heard loud and clear by every body around the world. It’s time to run because you’ve got new sneakers. Because you have blogged for months on today’s preparations. Because your friends are running. Because you are running alone. It’s time to run because you want to win. It’s time to run because you are a winner anyway. It’s time to run because today is the day to run. Because today is the day to stop everything else for. It’s time to run just because.

How much cigarette in tobacco?
Bidis are injurious to health, chewing tobacco is injurious to health, cigarettes are injurious to health. The proposed tobacco legislation bill takes a stance against cigarette consumption alone, which comprises only 0.16th part of total tobacco consumption. Are we being fair?

How statutory is statutory?
The proposed tobacco legislation bill states that cigarette packs must mention their nicotine content, while bidi and chewing tobacco packs may not. Whereas the concentration of nicotine in cigarettes is only about a quarter of that in the others. Are we being fair?

How international is the domestic market?
The proposed tobacco legislation bill restricts the advertising of cigarettes. Because cigarette smoking is injurious to health. However, the bill applies only to Indian brands. But, as we all know, international brands are as injurious to health as their domestic counterparts. Are we being fair?

Mr Anandan turned the page. The car stereo blasted mutely with Bruce Springsteen on low volume. The city bustled past silently on the other side of rolled-up windows. The A.C. hummed noiselessly in beat. Mr Anandan turned another page.

It was one of those cheap novels he had bought off the platform once when he had gone to see his sister off at the station. The train had been late. He had bought the book as protection against his sister’s famous chatter. But he hadn’t been able to get to the second page. She had, as always, won. Or rather, her vocal chords did.

Anyway, today, after about four months, he had suddenly found that book again. Stashed away in the dashboard. And now was as good a time as any to take up where he had left off. It was one of those stories. Of Lata. A nondescript girl. being brought up in a nondescript home. The usual drunkard who could have been her father, or maybe not. The long-suffering mother who did her bit in nagging, cooking and raising all her nondescript children. Who went to the usual nondescript school. The girl was at the usual age of fifteen (there never seemed much for authors to write about, about girls who were not that age). And she was discovering (“yes, as expected” Mr Anandan grimaced) about “life at the age of fifteen”. “Take me to the river…” Springsteen pleaded to the car.

Mr Anandan none-too-willingly followed the author who followed Lata with pen and notepad every day. From when she awoke, brushed her teeth, got ready for school, ignored her father, nodded at her mother, went to school, blushed at the boy next door, came back home to write poems over her homework, wept she herself knew not why, to when she went to bed to confide in the only friend she had (“fifteen-year-old girls in novels bought off platforms never have friends” thought Mr Anandan) – Meena, a girl who existed only in her mind.

Mr Anandan turned the thirty-seventh page. Where Meena told Lata one day that they should run away. There seemed to be no reason to. Neither was there any reason to stay. Lata packed. Meena didn’t need to. Somehow. And then they walked out together. Towards the highway. After about five hours of walking and seven more pages they came to a little roadside shop that had a pitcherful of water kept outside it. This they needed. Badly. The cellphone rang. “Hallo, Mr Anandan? You can come in now, sir. Your table is ready”. Mr Anandan put the book back into the dashboard, turned off the stereo, stepped out, locked the car, and walked into Eden for lunch.

Eden. Worth waiting for. And people really do.
