Biological mother

The baby startled into being.

And brought her teeth down on the cord. 
And stared at her baby. 
Nothing registered after that. 
The next kicks, the ridicule, the clucking. 
The wise man ordering the witch to be burnt at the stake. 
Nothing. 
Like a scream in a deaf man’s ear. 
A void that demanded. 
But would not say what. 
Like quicksand.

She felt motherhood. 
Which rendered her immobile. 
Till she turned to ash.
